Start a Local Unit

Thank you for expressing interest in PTA/PTSA.  The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) works earnestly for all children and we would sincerely welcome your group joining our efforts.

For over 100 years, the PTA has worked on behalf of children in support of a juvenile justice system, child labor laws, mandatory childhood immunizations, kindergarten, and the school lunch program.  Today our efforts continue as we work for adequate school funding, parent involvement and safe schools.

As a PTA/PTSA, you will have access to PTA programs, resources, training and networking.  Your PTA will be a self-governing unit, planning programs and projects that are relevant to the needs of your community’s children.  PTA unites parents, school staff and the community to create a solid working relationship that is essential in providing children with an ideal learning environment.

Members are the lifeblood of the PTA/PTSA.  We encourage you to enlist and involve as many individuals as possible, be they parents, staff, community members, grandparents, or business leaders.  Anyone who is interested in children may join a PTA/PTSA.  Once your unit is officially organized, a minimum of 20 members is needed before a PTA charter can be issued.  Members of your local unit are automatically members of the Minnesota PTA and the National PTA and will enjoy numerous benefits as such.  Yearly membership dues are $5.75 ($4.00 for state dues and $1.75 for national dues) and your local unit may decide to collect an additional amount for local dues.

If you are interested in learning more about PTA, please feel free to contact the state office. We will be happy to connect you with members of our Board to to answer questions and help you as you begin the process of organizing your local unit.
