What is a PTA?
PTAs have access to experts, resources, training, and dozens of programs and initiatives. Over the years, Minnesota PTA has provided access to fine arts opportunities through National PTA's Reflections program. Local PTAs have received grants to promote healthy lifestyles and digital safety. National PTA opened a Center for Family Engagement and has developed National Standards for Family Engagement. When a school has a PTA, parents are better informed and more engaged, and the learning environment is more supportive for students—plus, the school has a better reputation in its community.
Administrative factors also set PTA apart from other parent groups. PTA offers a national and state infrastructure, with staff and trained volunteer leaders available to assist PTAs in securing nonprofit status, filing government paperwork, creating bylaws, purchasing low-cost insurance and training leaders. These support services are included in PTA membership at no additional cost.
Each local PTA is a member-led and member-run independent association providing programs, activities and services to support its members and community. All PTAs are established to achieve PTA’s mission. All PTAs must comply with local, state and federal laws and regulations.
Local PTAs are connected to their state PTA, at times a district, council or region PTA within the state and National PTA. These connections form a nationwide network of millions of members working on behalf of all children and youth.
